Under the leadership of the Egyptologist Richard Lepsius, the Royal Prussian Expedition to Egypt and Ethiopia was carried out between 1842 and 1845. Its mission was to acquire Egyptian originals and to scientifcally document monuments. On October 15, 1842, the expedition members climbed to the top of the Pyramid of Cheops to commemorate the birthday of Prussian King Frederick William IV. The bizarre scene of what was in a sense a colonialist first ascent and was captured in a drawing by Johann Jakob Frey and later published as a lithograph. This image is part of the display of the New Museum in Berlin. In the museum setting is not critically commented on the image, like the above text does in the database of the Berlin Art Library (German: Kunstbibliothek Berlin). The display names all white people on the image, but the two men who guided them and are with them in the center remain without a name.

Introduction to the exhibition artists' works in German (by Susanne Jakubczyk)
Curren(t)cies travel invisibly. More silently than words, flowing, channeling: methodology and infrastructure. Human organizational patterns and roads, vehicles and architectures, are the flows (currents) and currencies of a globalized world. As a white, European artist, I engage with colonial expansion and exploitation. The connections between water circuits, bodies, resistance, romance, tourism, transportation, class, and historiography are part of a long-term artistic inquiry into feminist, anti-colonial, and transnational small group methodologies that I have been working on since 2019.
